A missing child. A tormented detective. A ticking clock.

Ten years ago, DCI Jack Logan stopped the serial child-killer dubbed 'Mister Whisper, ' earning himself a commendation, a drinking problem, and a broken marriage in the process.

Now, he spends his days working in Glasgow's Major Investigations Team, and his nights reliving the horrors of what he saw.

And what he did.

When another child disappears a hundred miles north in the Highlands, Jack is sent to lead the investigation and bring the boy home.

But as similarities between the two cases grow, could it be that Jack caught the wrong man all those years ago?

And, if so, is the real Mister Whisper about to claim his fourth victim?

JD Kirk lives in the Highlands of Scotland with his wife, two children, and a number of sturdy umbrellas. He also doesn't exist. JD is, in fact, the pen name of award-winning author, comic book writer and screenwriter, Barry Hutchison, who also, coincidentally, lives in the Highlands with his wife, two children, and the aforementioned umbrellas.

He has no idea what the 'JD' bit stands for.

Not really sure what else to say. This is the first book I have read from this author, but it definitely won't be the last.
It was an amazing book. The twists and turns, all the way from beginning to end. Awesome start to a series, I can't wait to see what happens next.

An enjoyable read of a somewhat formulaic murder mystery with a likable lead detective. Loved the setting and all the colloquialisms that made me chuckle all the way through. Will read the next installment for sure.

I love all the characters. The storyline is fast paced but detailed and very engaging. The unexpected twists throughout the book kept me reading to find out what might happen next. Highly recommend.

Great police procedural! Quirky, brash, sarcastic, all words to describe DCI Logan…but he doesn’t play games and gets the bad guys! Great story with witty banter mixed in. Looking forward to the next book.

This book had me sitting on the edge of my chair on pins and needles. I had a hard time reading it and I had a hard time putting it down!! I can't say too much then I'd give it all away.! You'll have to read it to see what happens!!

Despite an interesting plot twist, I found this protagonist, DCI Logan, to be particularly unlikeable and not very bright. In fact, in this story, at least, he stumbled on to the solution to the crime in spite of himself. Hopefully, he is more mellow in Book 2. If not, there will be no Book 3 for me.

The main character, DCI Logan, takes some warming to ... but stick with him. In stark contrast the surrounding cast of characters, the team, are more likeable. Together they tackle a child abduction case, one that mirrors three earlier cases. The story was solid and overall this was a great read. A "page Turner" (or on my Kindle a "swipe left"). I have already downloaded the next book in the series.

4.5☆s Excellent read further enhanced by excellent narration. [ A bit too gruesome at times, hoping the series won't get more so as it goes on, because I otherwise look forward to the series.] Found via a recommendation for 5☆ reads via audiobook addicts Facebook group.

5.0 out of 5 stars Full of dread.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 10, 2024
I came to this after thoroughly enjoying City of Scars and deciding that JD Kirk would be my new crime author. A Litter of Bones establishes DCI Jack Logan as the archetypal hard Glaswegian cop with a line in snappy repartee, old school methods and a deep passion for justice for victims. It introduces us to the main cast of Fort William's police force and the joyful practice of Scottish inter-regional banter. That's a favourite part of this series for me, alongside the warmth of the police camaraderie, forged under great stress.
A Litter of Bones is heart-rending, tapping into worst fears. The denouement must remind us of how damage begets damage, and I imagine that some will cast their minds to cases we have known in the UK. It has the happiest of endings as well as the saddest of endings. It's a strong first book in what looks to be a satisfying series which combines procedural challenge, characters we come to know like friends and thought-provoking crimes.

Reviewed in Germany on June 4, 2023
Usually I read books you can learn something from, but for a change, I went for a novel, chose "A litter of bones" and loved it. Developed characters, thoughts and situations explained in detail, it was like watching a good movie in my head...engaging story and the great ending...I would for sure recommend it!
