Hollow Heathens: Book of Blackwell (Tales of Weeping Hollow 1) Kindle Edition
From Amazon's #1 bestselling author in Gothic Romance comes a haunting and forbidden love strong enough to murder fears and break centuries-old curses.
Once upon a time, there lived a girl named Fallon who was taken far away from home shortly after she was born.
A home that held more than strange traditions and bizarre superstitions.
Twenty-four years later, she returned to Weeping Hollow, a town she'd only heard about in stories during restless nights under a marble moon, to take care of her last living relative.
They called the nosy mortician a freakshow-a ghastly thing.
They said I couldn't go near her.
Still, there was this aching pull to Fallon Grimaldi that I couldn't escape.
A nostalgic pull as if we'd been here before.
Once upon a time, there lived a mysterious boy named Julian with a curse as old as centuries wrapped around his soul.
He was one of the four Hollow Heathens, the very dark creatures who caused the town's people to live in fear.
And the Blackwell name was stained with darkness and death.
They called him a monster. Cold and hollow.
They said I shouldn't go near him.
Still, there was this aching pull to Julian Blackwell that I couldn't escape.
A nostalgic pull as if we'd been here before.
Hollow Heathens can be read as a stand-alone or within the interconnected series. For a better reading experience, read books in the order they are published.

First Impressions
Hollow Heathens is the first installment in the “Tales of Weeping Hollow” series. This is also my very first Nicole Fiorina novel. This is a novel that I have been wanting to get it, and to be honest I hear “Bone Island” is epic but due to the world-building, certain aspects make more sense upon reading “Hollow Heathens” and I was so intrigued by this one and I knew I wanted to save it for this time of year. And if you are looking for a highly atmospheric read for fall time, this book must be on your list. In fact, if you love real writing talent, this is an author you need to pay attention to. I was completely floored by this book and the writing style that was portrayed within this story. I have never read such writing like this that has such attention to detail, the world builds so intricately and the chemistry between our couple is vibrant and real. Hollow Heathens is a gothic paranormal romance. It’s set in a small town and has a forbidden touch to the romance. It’s a story that is epic and packed with lyrical meaning and packs such an intense punch and will literally spook you within each chapter. It’s a book I can’t recommend enough and I admire the author in what she was able to create in this timeless romance.
First Line
Things that lurk in the darkness; monsters, ghosts, ghastly supernatural beings tethered by bottomless energy to keep them there, pinned to the earth and walking without direction.
Summary
Fallon was taken away from her childhood home as a form of protection and has lived away from Weeping Hollow majority of her life. She has now returned after exchanging letters with her grandfather who is in need of her. Her grandfather is her only family left and she is determined to get the answers to what happened to her mother and the mystery behind her past but also hopes to find herself and find a place of acceptance. Fallon has always been different which sets her apart from everyone else. When she comes to Weeping Hollow, there is so much mystery surrounding the people who live there. There is a magic in the air that is sometimes dark and twisted, and she is drawn to one of the four Hollow Heathens, Julian, who is forbidden to her. Julian is cursed as is his fellow Heathens and has to wear a mask over his face or those who see his true face will die. The coven has determined that Julian is too dangerous and he can’t get near Fallon. But Fallon is the only one who truly sees Julian as more than a cursed Heathen, she sees the man he is on the inside and quiets the turmoil in his head. But Fallon and Julian were never meant to find each other, but can their connection be the key to freeing Weeping Hallow and his closest friends from a curse they were dealt?
What I Loved
Hollow Heathens is a story I wasn’t expecting to be as good as it truly was. I do recommend if you can, getting this in audio. I am telling you the experience will be even more elevated. There is a very strong lyrical feel to the writing that Nicole Fiorina implements within her story here, and the narration really brings out that quality so well. So Hollow Heathens is a story that will instantly captivate you. I was so quickly drawn into this story and the mystery behind it all. I do think this is a book you need to take time with in order to get the full scope and vibe of the story. I read this one all day because I knew I wanted to get more time with it. I am really happy that I took the time reading this one and didn’t rush it because its not a story that is a quick read, you definitely want to ease into it. I even kept my audio narration at 1.4x speed to just really enjoy it a bit more. The story is captivating and we get multiple POV’s in this story. Mostly from Fallon and Julian, but we do get a sideline story of the origins of the curse and why its so vital to the story. This POV is short, really only a couple of pages a few times throughout the story and added such dimension into the background of the curse.
I think what I was drawn to the most is the atmosphere of this story. If you want a story that will literally awaken your senses, then this book will do that. I guarantee that it will take you on a ride you won’t be expecting. There is a talent that this author has that is so different from what I was expecting with this one here. What this author writes in the attention to detail is so crafty. The world-building is such that is so complex but not too complex that you get lost in the story. It’s slowly built with such detail that it’s an enriching experience. Then we have the cast throughout the story. I will say that it can be overwhelming for all the characters that are involved here, my best advice is to be patient with it and take time to learn them all as they all have roles within the story. The primary characters Julian and Fallon are so vibrantly portrayed. Their journey together was intimate and so haunting. You immediately feel the connection that these two have together. And even though Julian has such mystery surrounding him, you also sense his tortured past and the way he gets treated is so heartfelt throughout the story. Fallon is a heroine you can easily get behind. She is a fighter for the relationship and will do anything to protect Julian. Julian is very protective of her, but he is also in a tough spot because he knows his future fate and doesn’t want to take Fallon down with him. He also knows that their love has been forbidden. He isn’t allowed 50 feet within her space but they have a bond that is worth fighting for. There is a intense magnetism that rises between them that borders the line of life and death.
There is also a beautiful captivating mystery that is implemented and the paranormal elements that are drawn into this story is so mystical. I was so enraptured by these darker magical elements and seeing what our characters are having to deal with and the dark forces that are trying to destroy them and Weeping Hollow. The different events that build up to the crescendo and climax of the story just add to the tension and conflicts that arise within the story being told. And the ending that we have, well I couldn’t have written a more epic finalizing ending that delivers all the heart and feels and capitalizes on the built-up storytelling and the author definitely delivered a true masterpiece here.
What I Struggled With
Nothing really, the writing can take some getting used to, but keep with it and take it easy and slow and you will be captivated!

The pace was slow so be ready for that and not very smutty. So if you are a mood reader, then you need to be in the mood to slow down and enjoy the ride. But it is deep and beautifully written. This book has strong star-crossed lovers, and "love you in every life" themes going on with a gothic twist. And the ending... just beautiful!
Hollow Heathens grabbed me right from the dark and foggy beginning and didn't let up until the very powerful end. From the setting to the characters, this story envelopes everything that spooky season is about.
Fallon Grimaldi is called back to Weeping Hollow, a place she knows very little about but that holds a piece of her that is still a mystery. She is there to aid her sick grandfather that is known as the town grump. But upon her arrival, it's obvious that many people don't want her there. She wants to leave, but leaving is easier said than done, especially when the powers of the town have other plans for her.
"..In Weeping Hollow, there are no answers. Reality bends here. Same with time. Some days it's hard to tell the difference between what's real and what isn't. This town can make you go mad the harder you try to figure it out."
Julian Blackwell is one of the Heathens that wants and urges Fallon to leave. Nothing good can come of her there. But he is drawn to the odd girl and cannot stay away from her. He needs to break a curse, but Fallon holds him back from fully committing. He needs her AND he needs answers.
'He kissed me as if he had been searching, as if he found a piece of himself again within me. A thing he'd lost somewhere along his way.'
This was my first book by Nicole Fiorina and now I need all of her words. She paints a whole world in vivid/dark colors with her words alone. The world in which she dropped us into in Weeping Hollow felt very dark, damp and full of fall vibes. I could see and feel the story unfold before my eyes like a movie. And the characters?! WOW! So epically portrayed between the covens and the townspeople. But Hollow Heathens was really all about Julian and Fallon. Julian is EVERYTHING. He truly is that dark, morally grey character that you can't help but want to intertwine yourself with. He is fighting against a curse, but also wants so much more than what life and his coven has given him. And Fallon is a special young woman that does not understand her past and how she fits in the world, but she knows her connection to Julian is unique and she cannot let it pass her by.
"No matter what they say, you were always mine, and you always will be."
This is quite a long book that took me awhile to get through, but it was beautifully told. It's a book that you can easily envision and you will want to make it last. And with each breath of the story, I let it flow over and consume me, Letting the darkness light the way through until Julian and Fallon found their answers. It is exciting and had the perfect vibes for the autumn/spooky season. I definitely recommend!
'My wretched soul would choose yours in this life and each one hereafter because, without you, I am certain a monster is what would become of me.'
Top reviews from other countries

I will not forget about Julian and Fallon, they are so intense and their story is so beautiful. One of the things I like the most in this book it was the scenery, Hollow Heathens was writed so beautifully that is impossible not to feel the sensation that you are living in the story with all the characters, the hightlights specially for Julian and Fallon. The way their relationship evolves was magical and I really loved every single moment of them.

Even though we have all the elements of a big cliché, it wasn't anything like that!!
Honestly I was expecting to guess the plot right away but it wasn't like that. The author kept me engaged in this book until the very last minute when the mistery gets out of the dark.
What I really loved was the fact that this story was so real... Like, you don't get the normal villain that everyone is afraid of, and no one asks him to explain his actions and that gets away with everything... In spite of all his power and in spite of him being the cursed one, and the action moving around him, Julian gets punished for his actions.. And when it comes to Fallon, I loved how she wouldn't get shit from anyone and wouldn't let people push her around and take decisions for her.
I loved this story, and for me, this book was REAL.

That could be review, because this is exactly that. I don’t think I have ever read such a beautiful written and intense love story before.
This book follows Fallon that returns to a little town, called Weeping Hollow after 24 years and Julian that lives with a century old curse and is one of the Hollow Heathens. I love the fact that Julian’s character is inspired by Frankenstein and the horror details in Weeping Hollow from Stephen King!
Nicole Fiorina her writing painted a vivid picture in my head and I found myself lost in this, fairytale like, story. I forgot everything around me and it almost felt like I was walking the cobbled streets of Weeping Hollow.
We got a little introduction of Bone Island in this book and I literally can’t wait to dive into another tale by this author. The premise that’s it’s inspired by a Edgar Allan Poe poem makes me even more excited 🐦⬛🖤

I loved this story so much. I loved Fallon and I loved Julian and I loved them so much together. I don't want to give spoilers away so I'll just say to read it and you won't be disappointed. Nicole Fiorina knows how to write stories that reach out and wrap around your heart.

HOLLOW HEATHENS, by Nicole Fiorina🖤 @authornicolefiorina
rating: ★★★★★ (5/5) obsessed!
Wow guys, Nicole Fiorina did it again, and she even exceeded herself! This book is utter perfection for autumn and spooky season, featuring a small odd town, cursed boys, witchcraft and covens, dark vibes and more. As much as I love Mia and Ollie, I think this has to be my favourite NF book so far. It has everything I could ever want in a book, and with her writing? The result will let you speechless. So, here’s a small summary of all the things I loved in this book.
The tropes/subgenres: this book is a combination of all the things I like in fantasy and romance books. Forbidden love? check. Magic and curses? check. Dark vibes? check. A worth dying love? check. check check! I love how the story made me feel at all times, like I was there in Hollow Heathens with Fallon and the other characters, witnessing everything with my own eyes. The atmosphere was just everything.
The characters: of course, I couldn’t expect any less than beautifully, raw, imperfect and emotional characters from Nicole, and that’s exactly what we got. I really loved Fallon since the beginning: her story, her personality… Julian is another male character that has to be instantly written in my book boyfriends’ list (along with all the other Hollow Heathens characters). Although I have to say another Heathen stole my heart before Julian, I loved seeing the two main characters’ interactions, their development, and their blossoming love and devotion for each other.
The writing: Well, this couldn’t miss in a Nicole Fiorina book review, could it? The number of quotes and whole paragraphs I’ve highlighted/underlined in this book… I can’t even count them. As always, Nicole’s writing made my heart and chest experience all types of feelings and emotional roller coasters. Her writing is one of those that have that something that just immerses you deep into the story, and it wasn’t any different with this book.
I can’t stop thinking about Julian and Fallon and the rest of the Heathens. I CAN’T wait for their books and see what will happen next, since this time the author didn’t leave us with any cliffhanger to deal with. Once again, a complete success and SUCH a great reading experience🤍
